Saint Catherine's Monastery tickets: which one to buy

Entry to the monastery grounds and the church is free; the museum, which holds the icons and a selection of manuscripts, charges a modest ticket. The difficulty is access rather than cost. The monastery lies in the interior of the Sinai peninsula, about two hours from Sharm el-Sheikh and seven from Cairo, and independent travel there requires checking the current security situation and permitted routes, which change. Organised trips are the normal way to come. Day tours from Sharm and Dahab leave very early.

The classic version is the overnight trip: drive through the night, climb Mount Sinai in the dark to reach the summit for sunrise, come down and visit the monastery when it opens at nine. That climb is either the 3,750 Steps of Repentance or the longer camel path, three hours up either way. Book through an operator that handles the permits. Some operators offer a daytime-only version that skips the mountain, which is easier and misses the point; the sunrise is what people remember.

Visiting Saint Catherine's Monastery: what to see

Justinian ordered the fortified monastery built between 548 and 565 around the site traditionally identified as the burning bush, and it has been inhabited ever since, which makes it the oldest continuously working Christian monastery in the world. Its granite walls stand up to 25 metres high beneath the mountains. Inside, the sixth-century basilica keeps its original carved wooden doors and roof beams, and the apse holds a mosaic of the Transfiguration of about 565. A descendant of the burning bush grows against a wall in the courtyard.

The library is second only to the Vatican's for early Christian manuscripts and held the Codex Sinaiticus until the nineteenth century; the icon collection includes encaustic panels from the sixth and seventh centuries that survived the iconoclast destructions because Sinai lay outside the empire. A Fatimid mosque of 1106 stands within the walls, which is one reason the site survived thirteen centuries of changing rulers. The monastery's charnel house holds the bones of centuries of monks, with the skeleton of the sixth-century porter Stephanos still in his robes beside the door.

Saint Catherine's Monastery opening hours and the best time to go

The monastery opens to visitors only in the morning, roughly nine to noon, and is closed on Fridays, Sundays and Orthodox feast days; this short window governs every itinerary. Sunrise on Mount Sinai is the reason most people come overnight, and the summit is bitterly cold before dawn at any season, so bring layers even in summer when the desert below reaches 40 degrees. Winter nights fall below freezing and snow is possible.

Dress code is strict: long trousers and covered shoulders, and the monks turn people away. Photography is forbidden inside the church and the museum. Allow two hours at the monastery. Water and food are limited on the mountain, so carry your own, and expect the descent to be harder on the knees than the climb was on the lungs. Camels can be hired for the first two thirds of the ascent, leaving only the final 750 steps to be walked, which is the usual compromise for anyone unsure of the climb.
