The Sa Pa Stone Church, also known as the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, stands on the main square in the centre of Sa Pa, a mountain town in Lào Cai province in the north-west of Vietnam, near the border with China, and it is free to see from outside, while the interior is usually open during masses. It is the town's best-known landmark and a popular meeting point, and its stone facade appears in most photographs of Sa Pa.

The town is about five to six hours from Hanoi by bus or by overnight train to Lào Cai followed by a bus, and it is the base for trekking in the Hoàng Liên Son mountains and the terraced rice fields of the Mường Hoa valley, inhabited by Hmong, Red Dao and other ethnic minority communities. Visitors combine the church with Sa Pa Lake, the market, Hàm Rồng Mountain, the cable car to Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, and walks to the villages of Cát Cát, Lao Chải and Tả Van. The square in front of the church is lively in the evening, with food stalls and local people selling handicrafts. Visitors should dress modestly if they enter during a service.

Visiting Sa Pa Stone Church: what to see

French missionaries arrived in the region in the late nineteenth century, when Sa Pa was developing as a hill station for French officials escaping the heat of the lowlands, and the church was built by them in the 1890s and completed in the early twentieth century. It was built of stone quarried from the surrounding mountains, in a simple Gothic style, with a tall bell tower topped by a spire and a cross, pointed windows and a steep roof, and it looks much like a village church in France. The church was damaged during the conflicts of the twentieth century, including the border war with China in 1979, which affected the region, and it was later restored.

The interior is simple, with wooden pews, stained glass windows and an altar, and it holds statues of the Virgin Mary and saints. The bell tower holds a bell that rings for masses. The church still serves the Catholic community of Sa Pa, including members of ethnic minority groups, and masses are held on weekdays and Sundays, sometimes in local languages. The small garden and the steps in front of the church are a popular place for photographs, and the square in front hosts cultural performances.

The church is open mainly during masses, typically in the early morning and evening, and on Sundays. Sa Pa has a cool mountain climate, and it can be foggy and cold in winter, from December to February, with occasional frost or snow. Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are the best seasons, with clear views and golden rice terraces before the harvest in September. Summer brings rain. The square is liveliest at weekends. Allow about fifteen minutes for the church, and spend a few days trekking in the valleys.
