Phát Diệm Cathedral tickets: which one to buy

Phát Diệm Cathedral stands in the town of Phát Diệm in Ninh Bình province, northern Vietnam, about 120 kilometres south of Hanoi, and entry is free. It is one of the most unusual churches in the world, a Catholic cathedral built in the style of a Vietnamese pagoda. Most visitors come on a day or overnight trip from Hanoi to Ninh Bình, combining the cathedral with the limestone karst landscapes of Tràng An and Tam Cốc, where boat trips pass through caves and rice fields, the ancient capital of Hoa Lư and the Bái Đính pagoda.

Phát Diệm is about forty minutes' drive from Ninh Bình town. The cathedral is an active church, with a large Catholic community in the region, and masses are held daily. Visitors should dress modestly and be respectful during services. A local guide can explain the complex's symbolism. Tours from Hanoi often include Phát Diệm as a stop on the way to or from Ninh Bình.

Visiting Phát Diệm Cathedral: what to see

The cathedral was built between 1875 and 1899 by a Vietnamese priest, Father Trần Lục, known as Father Six, who designed it to blend Christian worship with Vietnamese architectural traditions. The complex is set around a lake, with the cathedral at the centre and several smaller chapels around it. At the entrance stands a large stone bell tower in the form of a pagoda gate, with a huge bell and stone slabs on which the bishop sat during celebrations. The cathedral itself is built of wood and stone, with a curved tiled roof like a Vietnamese communal house, and its interior has massive columns made from single ironwood tree trunks, a long nave and a gilded altar carved with Vietnamese motifs, including dragons, lotus flowers and phoenixes, combined with Christian symbols.

The chapels around it, dedicated to different saints, include one built of stone with carvings of Vietnamese plants. Father Six is buried in front of the cathedral. The bell tower's huge bell weighs about two tonnes and was cast in the nineteenth century. The cathedral's roof is supported by a frame of ironwood beams, joined without nails in the traditional manner. The small stone chapel, dedicated to the Immaculate Heart, is carved from blocks brought from Thanh Hóa. The lake in front of the cathedral has a small island with a statue of Jesus. The complex's gardens are planted with trees and flowers. Stone slabs in the bell tower's ground floor were used by the clergy during ceremonies. The cathedral can hold several thousand worshippers.

Phát Diệm Cathedral opening hours and the best time to go

The cathedral is open daily, with masses early in the morning and in the evening, and visiting during the day is easy. Northern Vietnam has a hot, humid summer and a cool winter; spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, and the rice fields of Ninh Bình are green in spring and golden before the harvest in May and October. Christmas is spectacular, with large crowds and decorations, and Easter is also celebrated. Allow about an hour for the cathedral complex, and combine the visit with a boat trip at Tràng An or Tam Cốc. The Tràng An boat trips, which pass through limestone caves, take about two to three hours and leave from a pier near Ninh Bình.
