Visby Cathedral tickets: which one to buy

Visby Cathedral, Sankta Maria domkyrka, stands in the northern part of the walled Hanseatic town of Visby, on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, Sweden, and entry is free, with donations welcome. It is the only medieval church in Visby still in use; the town's other medieval churches stand as romantic ruins. Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with an almost complete medieval town wall, and it is reached by ferry from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn on the Swedish mainland in about three hours, or by plane from Stockholm.

Visitors usually combine the cathedral with a walk along the town wall, the ruins of Saint Nicholas, Saint Karin and Saint Clemens, the Gotland Museum, which displays Viking picture stones and silver hoards, and the botanical garden. The cathedral is active, with services, weddings and concerts, and visiting is restricted during worship. The steep streets leading up behind the cathedral offer good views of its towers and of the sea. Gotland is a popular summer holiday destination for Swedes, and the island's beaches, sea stacks and countryside churches are worth exploring by bicycle or car.

Visiting Visby Cathedral: what to see

The church was built by the German merchants who settled in Visby when the town was one of the leading trading centres of the Baltic, and it was consecrated in 1225, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was enlarged several times in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and it combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. When Gotland became Lutheran after the Reformation, the church became the parish church of Visby, while the town's many other churches were abandoned and fell into ruin. It became a cathedral in 1572, when Visby got its own bishop.

The church's most distinctive feature is its three towers, the tall west tower and two slender eastern towers, whose black baroque roofs, added in the eighteenth century, give the building an unusual silhouette. Inside, the church has a wide hall with vaults supported by columns, and it holds a medieval baptismal font carved of red Gotland limestone, a baroque pulpit, a large altarpiece from the nineteenth century, stained glass windows and memorial plaques and gravestones of Visby merchants and families. The Swertingska Chapel, on the south side, was built by a wealthy merchant family in the fourteenth century. The church was restored in the late nineteenth century and again in the twentieth. Organ concerts are held in summer.

Visby Cathedral opening hours and the best time to go

The cathedral is open daily, with shorter hours in winter and during services. Summer is the busiest season on Gotland, especially in July, and Almedalen Week, a political festival, fills Visby in late June or early July. Medieval Week, in early August, brings costumes, markets, tournaments and concerts, and the cathedral hosts events. Spring and September are quieter and pleasant. Winter is calm, with few visitors. Allow about half an hour for the cathedral, and walk along the wall and through the ruins afterwards.
