Albania was declared the world's first atheist state in 1967, and churches and mosques were closed, destroyed or converted. After the fall of communism, religious freedom returned, and the Orthodox Church began to rebuild. The Resurrection Cathedral was built between 2006 and 2012 and consecrated in 2012, under Archbishop Anastasios, who led the revival of the Albanian Orthodox Church. It is a large modern building inspired by Byzantine architecture, with a central dome, a separate tall bell tower and white stone walls. The interior is bright, with icons, mosaics and a large chandelier under the dome, and a carved iconostasis.

The complex also houses the Chapel of the Nativity, a museum of icons, a library and meeting rooms. Its size and prominence reflect both the importance of the Orthodox community in Albania and the country's new openness. The bell tower stands apart from the church and is visible from many parts of central Tirana. Mosaics above the entrance depict the Resurrection, and the icons inside were painted by Albanian and Greek artists. The complex includes a garden, a fountain and seating areas where locals gather. The cathedral hosts concerts of Byzantine chant and cultural events. The cathedral is open daily. Tirana has hot summers and mild, rainy winters; spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Orthodox Easter and Christmas are celebrated with large services, and the midnight Easter service draws crowds. The city is lively in the evenings, when people stroll in the Blloku district and along the boulevards. Skanderbeg Square, the largest pedestrian square in the Balkans, is a few minutes away. Allow about twenty minutes for the cathedral, and continue on foot to the square, the Et'hem Bey Mosque and the Pyramid. The Bunk'Art 2 museum, in a former government nuclear bunker, is a short walk away and explains the history of the communist secret police.
