The church of San Jose stands in the Casco Viejo, the old quarter of Panama City listed by UNESCO, a few blocks from the main square and the cathedral, and it is free to enter, with a donation box for its upkeep. Its great treasure is the golden altar, and the church is one of the standard stops on every walking tour of the Casco Viejo, along with the cathedral, the French plaza, the ruins of the old Jesuit college and the presidential palace.
Tours of the city often combine the old quarter with the Panama Canal locks at Miraflores and the ruins of Panama Viejo, the original city destroyed by the pirate Henry Morgan. The Casco Viejo is compact and easy to explore on foot, with restored colonial buildings, restaurants and rooftop bars. The church is active, so visiting pauses during mass. Modest dress is appreciated. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to reach the Casco Viejo from the rest of the city.
Live prices from GetYourGuide for tours whose route includes this church. Free cancellation on most of them.
The golden altar has a story that local guides love to tell. It was made for the church of the Augustinians in old Panama, which was sacked by Henry Morgan's pirates in 1671. According to legend, a priest painted the carved and gilded altar black, or covered it with mud, to disguise it, and told Morgan that it had already been stolen; the pirate supposedly left it behind and even gave money to replace it. When the city was rebuilt on its present site, the altar was moved to this church.
The altar is a towering baroque retable of carved mahogany covered in gold leaf, filling the end of the nave with columns, niches, saints and angels. The rest of the church is simple, with whitewashed walls and a wooden ceiling, which makes the altar seem even more dazzling. Several other carved and gilded side altars survive from the colonial period. A small display near the door explains the story of the altar and shows old photographs of the church.
Panama City is hot and humid all year, and the dry season from mid-December to April is the most comfortable time to visit; the rainy season brings heavy afternoon downpours. Mornings are the best time to walk the Casco Viejo, before the heat builds and while the churches are open. The old quarter becomes lively in the evening, with restaurants and rooftop bars filling up. Carnival in February and the independence celebrations in November bring parades and crowds.
Holy Week is marked with processions in the old quarter. Sunday mass is well attended by local families. Allow twenty minutes for the church, and combine it with a walk along the sea wall at the tip of the Casco Viejo, which looks across the bay to the skyscrapers of the modern city. The canal locks at Miraflores are about twenty minutes away by taxi and best seen in the morning when ships pass.
