The cathedral sits on the main square of the old town, a minute from the pedestrian street that carries most of St Augustine's visitors, and entry is free with a donation box by the door. Volunteer guides are usually present in the afternoons and give short talks; they are the best source on the building and cost nothing. Almost every walking tour of the old town passes the front, and the history-focused ones go in, linking the church with the Spanish fort, the colonial quarter and the story of the 1565 landing.

Trolley tours stop outside. If you are buying a combination ticket for the fort, the lighthouse and the museums, note that the cathedral is not part of it and needs nothing. Evening ghost tours make much of the burial ground and the older chapels; treat those as entertainment. Mass times are posted and visiting pauses then, which in a parish this old means several interruptions a day.

The congregation dates from the founding of the town in 1565 and is the oldest Christian congregation in the continental United States, a claim the parish makes on every notice board and can support with its own registers. The present church was built between 1793 and 1797, in the second Spanish period, from coquina, the local shell-and-limestone rock quarried on the island across the bay and used for the fort as well. It is soft, porous and pale, and it weathers into a texture unlike anything else in North America.

A fire in 1887 gutted the building; the rebuilding that followed added the bell tower and reshaped the interior, and murals of the mission history were painted in the 1900s. The result is a Spanish colonial shell with late Victorian contents, and the joins are visible if you look at the masonry. Four bells hang in the tower, one of them cast in the eighteenth century. It was designated a national historic landmark in 1970.

Florida's tourist season here runs long, but spring and late autumn are the comfortable months; July and August are humid and the afternoon thunderstorms are reliable. The best time of year is the Nights of Lights, when the old town is lit with millions of white bulbs from late November until the end of January and the square outside the cathedral is the centre of it. Christmas services fill the church.

Mornings are quiet inside, before the day trippers arrive from Jacksonville and the cruise coaches from Orlando. The founding of the town is marked in early September with a mass and a procession. The Spanish fort is five minutes away on the waterfront, the oldest house museum ten minutes south, and the whole colonial quarter is walkable, so the cathedral fits into a morning rather than needing one. Allow twenty-five minutes unless a guide is speaking.
