Bath Abbey tickets: which one to buy

The abbey asks for a suggested donation rather than a fixed ticket for the nave, and the atmosphere is welcoming rather than commercial. The paid option is the Tower Tour, a guided climb of 212 steps that goes behind the clock face, out onto the roof above the fan vault and up among the bells, in small groups every hour; it is the best value in Bath and books out in summer. Footprint, the new floor and heating project completed in 2021, added a discovery centre and a cafe in the cellars.

Walking tours of the city include the abbey and cost several times the donation; the free Mayor's Honorary Guides tours of Bath, which start outside the Pump Room, are excellent and cost nothing. The Roman Baths next door are a separate and much larger ticket. The abbey shop sells the tower tour tickets and they are also available online, which is the safer route in July and August.

Visiting Bath Abbey: what to see

A monastery was founded here in the seventh century and Edgar was crowned first king of all England in its church in 973, a ceremony that still shapes the British coronation rite. The Benedictine abbey was rebuilt from 1499 by Bishop Oliver King, who claimed to have dreamed of angels climbing ladders to heaven and of an instruction to restore the church; both appear carved on the west front, with the angels on their ladders and one of them descending head first.

Dissolved in 1539 and left roofless, the building was patched up as a parish church and given its fan vaults, which Gilbert Scott completed over the nave in the 1860s to match the original work in the choir. The floor is paved with about 900 ledger stones, the densest collection of memorial slabs in any English church, relaid during the recent work. The east window, 52 panels of Victorian glass telling the life of Christ, was blown out in the wartime bombing of 1942 and rebuilt from salvaged fragments.

Bath Abbey opening hours and the best time to go

Open Monday to Saturday from mid-morning to late afternoon and on Sunday afternoons between services, with the abbey closing to visitors for worship. Tower tours run through the day with no climbs during services or in high wind. Bath is busiest from June to September and at the Christmas market in late November and December, when the streets around the abbey are impassable.

The fan vault is best seen on a bright day, when light from the clerestory picks out the ribs. Photography without flash is allowed. There is no dress code. Allow forty minutes for the abbey, ninety with the tower. The Roman Baths, the Pump Room and Bath's Georgian terraces are all within a few minutes on foot. Choral Evensong is sung several times a week and is free, and the abbey's Christmas carol services are broadcast locally.
