Iglesia de la Preciosa Sangre

Iglesia de la Preciosa Sangre

Cáceres, Spain

The church closes the top of the square of San Jorge in the walled old town of Caceres, and the twin white towers above the steps are the image most visitors take away from the city. Entry to the church is free; the tower climb is ticketed and inexpensive and is the reason to go. From the top you look across the entire monumental quarter, a dense field of stone towers and tiled roofs with almost nothing modern in view, which is exactly why this town is used so often as a film location.

Cáceres Co-cathedral

Cáceres Co-cathedral

Cáceres, Spain

Santa Maria is the principal church of the walled old town of Caceres, standing on the square just inside the main gate, and it charges a small admission that includes the tower. Take it: the climb is short and the view over the monumental quarter, a field of granite towers and storks' nests with nothing modern in sight, is the best in the city. The cathedral of the diocese is in Coria, which is why this one carries the co-cathedral title.
