The Catholic cathedral of Athens stands on Panepistimiou avenue, a wide nineteenth-century street between Syntagma square and Omonia, and is free to enter. It is not on the standard tourist route, which runs south towards the Acropolis, and that is precisely why it is worth the ten-minute detour. Architecture tours of modern Athens include it with the neoclassical trilogy of the academy, the university and the library a few hundred metres further along, all products of the same Bavarian-influenced decades after independence.

The Monastery of Kaisariani stands in a pine forest on the slopes of Mount Hymettus, about five kilometres east of central Athens, and a small admission is charged; the monastery is closed on Mondays. It is one of the most peaceful places near Athens, and it is a popular spot for walks and picnics. Visitors can reach it by bus 224 from the city centre to the suburb of Kaisariani, followed by a walk uphill of about half an hour, or by taxi.
