The church is free to enter. A small ticket covers the museum in the sacristy and the chapel of the relics, which holds the head of St Dominic in a reliquary and a collection of church plate and manuscripts. Guided tours of Bologna include San Domenico and cost several times that. The basilica is ten minutes south of Piazza Maggiore on its own square, which still has two medieval canopied tombs of law professors standing in the open.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca stands on the Colle della Guardia, a wooded hill about three hundred metres above Bologna, and entry to the church is free; access to the panoramic terrace in the dome is ticketed and gives views over the city and the hills. The sanctuary is linked to the city by the longest portico in the world, almost four kilometres long with 666 arches, which pilgrims and walkers follow uphill from the Porta Saragozza;
