Bagrati Cathedral stands on Ukimerioni Hill above the city of Kutaisi, in western Georgia, and entry is free. It is one of the most important monuments of medieval Georgian architecture, and it offers views over Kutaisi and the Rioni river. Kutaisi is the second largest city in Georgia, with an airport served by budget flights, and it is a good base for visiting the Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO site about eleven kilometres away, the Motsameta Monastery on a cliff, the Prometheus Cave and the Sataplia nature reserve with dinosaur footprints.
Motsameta Monastery stands on a cliff above a bend of the Tskaltsitela river, about six kilometres east of Kutaisi, in western Georgia, and entry is free. It is one of the most picturesque monasteries in Georgia, surrounded by forest and the river gorge. Most visitors combine Motsameta with Gelati Monastery, about four kilometres away, and with Bagrati Cathedral in Kutaisi, on a half-day tour. A taxi from Kutaisi is the easiest way to reach it.
