Temppeliaukio Church tickets: which one to buy

Temppeliaukio Church, also known as the Rock Church, stands in the Töölö district of Helsinki, Finland, a short walk from the city centre and the Kamppi shopping centre, and a ticket is required for tourist visits, while services and some concerts are free. It is a Lutheran church built directly into a granite outcrop, and it is one of the most visited sights in Helsinki, with hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Tour buses stop at the church, so it can be crowded at midday, especially when cruise ships are in port.

Walking tours of Helsinki combine the church with the Sibelius Monument, the Helsinki Cathedral on Senate Square, the Uspenski Cathedral, the Market Square and the Oodi library, and the Suomenlinna sea fortress is a short ferry ride away. The church is active, with services and weddings, and it may close for events, so check the opening times, which change often. The church's excellent acoustics make it a popular concert venue. The exterior is modest, and from the street only the copper dome and a low stone wall are visible, which surprises many first-time visitors.

Visiting Temppeliaukio Church: what to see

The site was planned for a church in the 1930s, but an architectural competition was interrupted by the Second World War. A new competition was held in 1961, and it was won by the brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, who proposed to excavate the church into the rock and keep the square's natural character. The church was completed in 1969. The interior is carved out of the granite, and the rough rock walls, left partly unworked, give the church its distinctive character. The roof is a large dome made of copper strips, about twenty-four metres in diameter, supported by concrete beams and separated from the walls by a ring of about one hundred and eighty glass windows, which let daylight flood in around the edge.

The walls were built up with rocks from the excavation, and water seeping through the rock is drained through channels. The altar is simple, set against the rock, and the organ, with more than three thousand pipes, was built by the Danish firm Marcussen & Søn. The church holds about seven hundred and fifty people, including a gallery. Visitors sit on the benches or stand in the middle to take in the space, which feels both natural and modern. Pianists sometimes practise or play in the church during the day.

The church is usually open daily for visitors, with hours that vary because of services, weddings and concerts, so check the timetable before going. Summer is the busiest season, with cruise passengers, and mornings and late afternoons are quieter. Sunshine through the ring of windows is especially beautiful on bright days. Winters in Helsinki are cold and dark, but the church is warm and atmospheric. Concerts are held throughout the year. Allow about half an hour for the church, and walk to the Sibelius Monument afterwards.
