Sanctuary of Peninha tickets: which one to buy

There is no ticket and no opening hours: the sanctuary stands on an open hilltop in the Sintra-Cascais natural park and the site can be walked at any time. The interiors of the chapel and the small palace beside it are closed and have been for years, so what you get is the exterior, the rock and the view. The access road from Cascais or Sintra is narrow and winding, and the last stretch is a track with limited parking.

Sunset picnic tours from Cascais cost a moderate amount and include the transport, a basket and sometimes stargazing afterwards, which is the main commercial product here. Walking up from Malveira da Serra takes about an hour. There is no cafe, no water and no shelter of any kind on the hill. The nearest fuel and food are in Malveira da Serra or Colares, several kilometres away in either direction. Tours from Cascais usually include a stop at Guincho beach on the way, which turns the outing into a half day rather than an hour on a hill.

Visiting Sanctuary of Peninha: what to see

Peninha sits at 448 metres on a rocky outcrop above the westernmost point of continental Europe, and people have been coming here since long before the chapel: excavations found rock-cut graves from the twelfth century and a cistern beside them. A hermitage dedicated to San Saturnino stood here in the sixteenth century, and the baroque chapel that survives was finished in 1710, its interior lined with blue and white tiles telling the life of the Virgin.

In 1918 a wealthy owner added a small mock-medieval palace on the summit, which has stood empty for decades. The reason people climb is the view: Cabo da Roca and the Atlantic to the west, the Sintra hills and the Pena Palace to the north, and on a clear evening the whole coast down to Cascais and the Lisbon estuary. The granite outcrop itself is marked with cup holes and cut steps of uncertain date, and the natural park signposts a short circular walk around the summit.

Open at all hours, which makes it one of the few places near Lisbon where sunset is the obvious plan. The hill catches the Atlantic wind and is genuinely cold after dark even in August, and the same wind means the site is often in cloud when the coast below is clear. Winter storms make the track unpleasant. The road has no lighting and the descent in the dark needs care.

There is no dress code and no photography restriction. Allow an hour on the hill. Combining Peninha with the Capuchos convent, twenty minutes away through the same forest, makes a half day that avoids the queues at Sintra's palaces entirely. Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the continent, is twenty minutes away and is where most sunset tours finish.
