Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey tickets: which one to buy

The island and its village are free to enter; the abbey at the top is the ticket. Buying it online saves the queue at the abbey door, which forms from mid-morning onwards in summer. The audio guide adds context that the sparse signage does not. Guided tours run several times a day in French and English and are included in the ticket price, which makes them the best value on the rock, though they cover the main rooms rather than the corners. Night visits in summer open the abbey after dark with lighting and music through the halls, a genuinely different experience and a separate ticket.

Most visitors arrive on a day trip: from Paris it is a long day of about four hours each way, usually by coach, sometimes by train to Rennes and a connecting bus. From Normandy and Brittany bases such as Bayeux, Rennes or Saint-Malo the drive is one to two hours and leaves time to stay past the afternoon rush. Tours that include the abbey ticket cost more than transport-only ones; check which you are buying, because the difference is usually about the price of the entry.

Visiting Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey: what to see

A monastery has stood here since 709, when the bishop of Avranches founded a sanctuary to the archangel Michael, and Benedictine monks arrived in 966. What you climb through is the result of a thousand years of building on a granite cone: Romanesque nave at the top, Gothic choir rebuilt after a collapse, and on the north side the three-storey complex called the Merveille, with the almonry at the bottom, the guests' hall in the middle and the cloister and refectory on top.

The cloister is the surprise, a garden of slender staggered columns hanging in mid-air above the bay. You also see the enormous treadwheel installed when the abbey was a prison after the French Revolution, worked by men to haul supplies up the cliff. Services are still held, and a small religious community lives here. The route through the abbey is one-way and involves several hundred steps, with no lift. Outside the abbey the village street below is a tight funnel of shops, best walked early or skipped by taking the ramparts path.

Tides govern everything here. The bay has the largest tidal range in continental Europe, and at high spring tides the water surrounds the mount completely, which is spectacular and worth timing a visit for; the official tide tables are published months ahead. Low water exposes the sand flats, where guided barefoot crossings run, never to be attempted alone because of quicksand and the speed of the incoming tide.

The abbey is open daily except a few public holidays, from morning to early evening, with last admission an hour before closing. Crowds peak between 11am and 3pm, so arrive at opening or come after four; in summer the evening visits run past ten. From the car parks and the visitor centre it is either a free shuttle or a walk of about forty minutes along the causeway, then a steep climb through the village and up to the abbey door, roughly 350 steps in total. Wind on the terrace is constant and cold even in summer.
