Matthias Church tickets: which one to buy

The church charges a modest entry that includes the museum in the gallery and the crypt; a slightly dearer ticket adds the tower, climbed in small guided groups up 197 steps with a view over the Danube and Pest. Buying at the door is normal and the queue is short. Concerts of organ and choral music are held several evenings a week and are ticketed separately by promoters; the acoustics are good and the setting is the real draw.

Guided tours of the Castle District nearly always include the church entry and cost several times the ticket, which buys context for Buda's layered history. The Fisherman's Bastion beside it is a separate small charge for the upper terraces and free below, and the two are usually visited together. Nothing here needs advance booking except the tower in high summer. If you only want to look inside briefly, the back of the nave is free during services, and mass is celebrated in Hungarian, Latin and English through the week.

Visiting Matthias Church: what to see

Tradition dates a church here to 1015, though the present building is essentially the late fourteenth-century Gothic hall, heavily rebuilt in the 1870s by Frigyes Schulek, who added the diamond-patterned Zsolnay tiles on the roof and the lace-like spire that make it instantly recognisable. Two Hungarian kings were crowned here, Franz Joseph in 1867 and Charles IV in 1916, and Liszt wrote his Coronation Mass for the first of them. Under Ottoman rule the church served as Buda's main mosque, whitewashed inside;

in 1686, during the siege, a wall collapsed and revealed a hidden Madonna, which the defenders took as a sign and the city fell the same day. Schulek's restoration painted the interior in dense geometric patterns based on medieval fragments, which gives the nave a warm, almost oriental feel unlike any other Hungarian church. The museum upstairs holds replicas of the crown jewels and a collection of reliquaries and vestments, and the crypt contains royal tombs from the Arpad dynasty, including Bela III and his queen.

Matthias Church opening hours and the best time to go

Open daily with shorter hours at weekends, when morning masses take priority; the church closes to visitors during services and for weddings, which are frequent in summer. The Castle District is busiest from mid-morning to late afternoon, and the church is small enough that groups fill it; arrive at opening or in the last hour. The roof tiles look best in low sun, so late afternoon is the moment for photographs from Holy Trinity Square.

Winter brings a small Christmas market to the square outside, one of the prettiest in the city. The tower climb is closed in bad weather and the stairs are narrow and unheated. Dress modestly, with shoulders covered. Photography without flash is allowed. Allow forty-five minutes for the church and museum, an hour and a half with the tower, and leave time for the Fisherman's Bastion terraces next door, which give the classic view over the Parliament across the river.
