Haghpat Monastery tickets: which one to buy

Haghpat stands on a plateau above the Debed river canyon in Lori province in northern Armenia, near the town of Alaverdi, and together with the monastery of Sanahin across the canyon it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. A small admission may be charged at the entrance. Most visitors come on a long day tour from Yerevan or as part of a route between Armenia and Georgia, since the Georgian border is not far to the north;

tours usually combine Haghpat with Sanahin and sometimes with the Akhtala monastery with its frescoes. The drive through the Debed canyon, lined with Soviet-era industrial towns and medieval churches, is striking in itself. Independent travellers can reach Alaverdi by train or minibus and take a taxi up to the village. Guides are sometimes available at the monastery. Modest dress is expected, and headscarves are appreciated for women in the churches. A small shop by the gate sells cards and locally made crafts.

Visiting Haghpat Monastery: what to see

The monastery was founded in the tenth century under the Bagratid kings and became one of the great centres of Armenian learning, with a school, a scriptorium and a library, rivalling Sanahin across the canyon. The main church, Surb Nshan, the Holy Sign, was built between 976 and 991 and carries on its eastern gable a relief of the royal founders holding a model of the church. Around it cluster later buildings: large gavits, a library building, a refectory, a separate bell tower of the thirteenth century and several chapels, built in grey-green stone and connected by courtyards, set in a village of old stone houses.

The monastery holds some of the finest khachkars in Armenia, including the Amenaprkich, the All-Saviour cross-stone of 1273, carved with a detailed Crucifixion and figures. Traces of frescoes survive in the main church. The whole complex is designed to blend into the hillside, with views over the canyon. Clay jars sunk into the floor of one building were used to store grain and wine for the brotherhood.

Haghpat Monastery opening hours and the best time to go

Late spring and early autumn are the best times to visit the Lori region, when the canyon is green or golden and temperatures are comfortable. Summer is warm but pleasant at this altitude, and winter brings snow and cold, with shorter daylight hours for touring. The monastery is quiet on weekdays and busier at weekends and during Armenian holidays, when families and wedding parties visit. Services are held on Sundays and feast days.

Morning light is best for photography in the courtyards. There are few facilities, though the village has a small guesthouse and cafes nearby. Allow about an hour at Haghpat, and at least as long for Sanahin, which is a twenty-minute drive down into the canyon and up the other side. The cable car from Alaverdi towards the plateau has operated intermittently, so check before relying on it.
