Church of St. Adalbert, Kraków tickets: which one to buy

This is the small stone church sitting on its own in the corner of the Main Square in Krakow, dwarfed by everything around it and walked past by most of the people crossing the square. Entry is free, and a tiny archaeological display in the basement charges a token amount when it is open. Every walking tour of the old town passes the door and the good ones stop, because the church explains the age of the city better than any of the larger buildings: it was here before the square was laid out.

Tours of underground Krakow visit the much larger excavation beneath the cloth hall a hundred metres away, which is ticketed, timed and worth booking. The church is used for services and for small concerts and closes without notice. Ten minutes covers it. There is no cloakroom and no seating, so treat it as a stop rather than a place to rest.

Visiting Church of St. Adalbert, Kraków: what to see

The church was built in the eleventh century and is one of the oldest stone churches in Poland, standing on a spot used for worship earlier still, at the point where the merchant road ran through the settlement. It is named for Adalbert, the missionary bishop killed by the Prussians in 997, whose body was famously ransomed for its weight in gold.

The market square was marked out around it in 1257, nearly two centuries later, which is why the church sits at an angle to the grid and why its floor is well below the present paving: the square has been resurfaced so many times that it has risen around the walls. The outside was given a baroque dome and rendering in the seventeenth century, so the Romanesque core is visible only in the masonry at the base and in the excavation below, where the earlier floor levels are exposed. The interior is a single low room under a shallow dome, and the whole floor sits roughly two metres below the paving outside.

The square is busy from mid-morning to late at night in season and is at its best at seven in the morning, when the pigeons outnumber the people and the light is across the cloth hall. The trumpet call from the tower of the larger church opposite sounds on every hour, day and night, and breaks off mid-phrase; it is the thing visitors remember. Advent brings the Christmas market to the square and the church is surrounded by stalls.

Summer is the peak season, and the city is cheap and quiet in February. Opening hours here are irregular and depend on whether a service is running. The basement display closes in winter. Combine this with the larger church across the square, which has the carved altarpiece and charges admission. Buskers and flower stalls work this corner of the square all year and the church doorway is the usual meeting point.
