Christ Church, Chelsea tickets: which one to buy

This is a parish church rather than a visitor attraction, and it should be approached as one. It stands on a quiet street between the King's Road and the Chelsea Embankment, a few minutes from the Physic Garden and the Royal Hospital, and it is free to enter whenever it is open, which is mainly around services and weekday mornings. No tour company sells it. What does exist, and is worth looking for, is the music: the church runs a choral tradition and holds recitals and carol services that are advertised locally and usually free or cheap.

Walking tours of Chelsea take in the streets around it, the writers' and artists' houses along Cheyne Walk, and the Physic Garden, which is ticketed and excellent. If you are visiting the Chelsea Flower Show in May, the church sits a few minutes from the showground and is a good place to escape the crowds. Street parking here is restricted on weekdays, so the underground at Sloane Square is the simpler approach.

Visiting Christ Church, Chelsea: what to see

Edward Blore, who also worked on Buckingham Palace, designed the church in 1838, and it was consecrated the following year as a chapel of ease to the older parish church nearby. It became a parish in its own right in 1860 and was reunited with its parent in 1986. The style is early Victorian Gothic Revival of the restrained kind, brick with stone dressings, closer in feeling to Regency architecture than to the muscular Gothic that arrived a generation later, and it is listed for that reason.

The furnishings are a collection of rescues from the City of London: the pulpit came in 1876 from a Wren church on Garlick Hill, and the organ case from another Wren church by the river, both of them displaced when City parishes were consolidated. Further additions were made in 1901. The interior is galleried, plain and unusually light, with clear glass in much of the nave. The galleries were built to seat servants from the surrounding houses and have survived unaltered.

Christ Church, Chelsea opening hours and the best time to go

Sunday morning is the obvious time, with a sung service and the building in use as it was meant to be. Weekday access depends on whether the parish office is staffed, and a telephone call ahead saves a wasted walk. Advent and Christmas bring carol services that fill the church and are among the best free events in this part of London. Chelsea is pleasant in any season and particularly in May, when the flower show turns the whole district into a garden and the surrounding pubs decorate their fronts for a competition.

The Physic Garden a few minutes away keeps seasonal hours and closes in winter. The Embankment walk, the Royal Hospital grounds and the shops of the King's Road are all within ten minutes. Twenty minutes inside the church is enough unless there is music, in which case stay. Chelsea Old Church, badly bombed in 1941 and rebuilt, stands ten minutes west and is worth adding.
