San Gregorio Armeno tickets: which one to buy

The church is on the street of the same name in the old centre of Naples, the one lined with workshops selling nativity figures, which is itself among the city's essential sights. Entry to the church is free; the cloister behind it is entered separately, through a door further up the hill, and keeps shorter morning hours. Take both, because the cloister is the quieter and stranger half.

Walking tours of the old centre include the complex along with the cathedral, the sculpture chapel at Sansevero and the underground city, and the better ones explain the convent's history rather than just pointing at the street. Tours focused on the nativity trade run in the weeks before Christmas and get into workshops that are otherwise closed to visitors. Nothing needs booking except the underground tours. The street is impassable in December, which is either the reason to come or the reason to avoid it.

Visiting San Gregorio Armeno: what to see

Nuns fleeing the Byzantine empire during the iconoclast period are said to have brought the relics of Gregory of Armenia here in the eighth century, settling on the site of a Roman temple. The present church was begun in 1574 and consecrated five years later, then refurbished repeatedly, and it is among the richest baroque interiors in a city full of them. A single nave is lined with chapels under a gilded wooden ceiling, and Luca Giordano frescoed the walls and the area around the dome windows in 1679.

The nuns, who came from noble families, heard mass from screened galleries above, and their grilles survive. Behind the church, the cloister is planted with orange and lemon trees around a marble fountain with statues of Christ and the Samaritan woman, and it is one of the few genuinely quiet places in the old centre. A chapel here keeps the relic of Saint Patricia, whose blood is said to liquefy weekly. The nuns ran their own pharmacy and kitchen garden, and parts of both survive behind the cloister wall.

The cloister opens in the morning only and closes early, so do it first and the church afterwards. The street outside is at its most extraordinary from late November through Christmas, when the nativity workshops are in full production and the crowd moves at a shuffle; the figures include the traditional shepherds and kings alongside satirical models of politicians and footballers, updated each year. Outside that season the workshops are still open and the street is walkable.

Naples is hot in August and much of the old centre shuts for two weeks around the middle of the month. Mornings are better for photographs in these narrow streets, since the sun reaches the paving only near midday. Allow half an hour for the church, twenty minutes for the cloister, and as long as you like for the street.
