Nice Cathedral tickets: which one to buy

Nice's cathedral is in the middle of the old town, on a small square that is also famous for its ice cream, and it is free to enter. There is nothing to book. Walking tours of the old town take it in along with the flower and food market on the Cours Saleya, the Italianate lanes and the climb to the castle hill, and food tours cover the same ground with more stops.

Both are worth taking, because the old town's Italian history is not obvious from a guidebook map and explains almost everything about the architecture, including this church. Guided visits inside the cathedral are occasionally run by the parish. The building keeps a long midday closure and shorter Sunday hours, which is the main planning constraint. If you are staying near the promenade, it is a ten-minute walk east, and the old town is best entered from the market end.

Visiting Nice Cathedral: what to see

Relics of Reparata, a young martyr from Caesarea, reached Nice in 1060, and a chapel was built for them at the foot of the castle rock. The present church came much later, between 1650 and 1685, at a point when Nice belonged to the house of Savoy and looked to Turin and Rome rather than to Paris. It is baroque accordingly, with a front added in the eighteenth century, a dome covered in glazed tiles that shows from the castle hill, and a bell tower beside it.

Inside, ten chapels line the aisles, each built and decorated by a guild or a confraternity, with a good deal of coloured marble, gilding and stucco packed into a space that is not large. The organ case and the carved choir stalls are eighteenth-century. Work continued on the decoration until 1949, and a thorough restoration in the 2000s cleaned the whole interior and brought the colours back. A chapel on the north side holds a wooden crucifix carried through the streets on Good Friday.

Nice Cathedral opening hours and the best time to go

Mornings are the time for the old town, when the market is working and the lanes are in shade. The cathedral closes for several hours around midday. Nice is busy from June to September and the old town is unpleasantly crowded in August; May, June and October are far better, and winter is mild and quiet. Carnival in February fills the city for two weeks with parades and flower battles. The feast of the patron in October brings a procession through the quarter.

The square in front has cafe tables and the ice cream shop on the corner has a queue most of the day, which is a fair indication. From the church it is ten minutes up to the castle hill for the view along the bay, and the lift at the eastern end saves the climb. Twenty-five minutes inside covers it. Parking in the old town is effectively impossible, so arrive on foot or by tram from the promenade.
