Saint-Sernin is free to walk into and stands ten minutes north of the main square of Toulouse, so the decision is only whether to take a guide and whether to pay the small charge for the crypt. Take both. The crypt holds the relic collection that made the church what it is, and without someone explaining the pilgrimage economy of the eleventh century the building reads as merely very large. Walking tours of the pink city pair it with the Jacobins church, which is the other essential stop and a complete contrast in materials and mood.

Tours built around the routes to Santiago de Compostela treat Saint-Sernin as the major French stop between Conques and the Pyrenees, and those go into the sculpture in detail. Organ recitals are ticketed separately and announced at the door. If you have a single morning in the city, a two-hour guided walk that ends here, followed by the Sunday market that wraps around the apse, is the most efficient plan available.

Visiting Basilica of Saint-Sernin, Toulouse: what to see

This is the largest surviving Romanesque church in Europe, built from the 1070s onwards in brick and stone to handle crowds of pilgrims, and the plan shows exactly that intention. A double aisle on each side of the nave lets people circulate without crossing the congregation, and the ambulatory behind the altar carries them past the relics in a loop. The relics themselves came largely as a gift from Charlemagne, according to the abbey's own tradition, and were added to for centuries.

Above the crossing rises an octagonal bell tower of five tiers, its upper arches cut to a distinct point, a shape copied across the whole region afterwards. Two doorways carry the best sculpture: one on the south side with an ascending Christ carried by angels, and an older one nearer the transept. In the ambulatory, seven marble reliefs of Christ and angels, carved around 1096 and attributed to Bernardus Gelduinus, are set into the wall at eye level. The nineteenth-century restoration by Viollet-le-Duc was partly undone in the 1990s, which is why the exterior looks less uniform than in old photographs.

Sunday morning is the best time to come. A large flea and food market fills the streets around the church, the doors are open for mass, and the whole quarter is busy in a way it is not on a weekday afternoon. The crypt keeps shorter hours than the church and closes over lunch, so check the board at the south door before deciding. Toulouse brick turns genuinely pink in low sun, and the hour before sunset on the west front is the reason photographers come.

Summer brings organ recitals on the eighteenth-century instrument in the west gallery, which is one of the important historic organs in France. The church is cool inside even in August, an advantage in a city that regularly passes thirty-five degrees. The student quarter around it means cheap food nearby and a good deal of noise at night. Allow an hour for the church and the crypt together, more if the sculpture interests you, and leave time to walk the outside of the apse, which is the part most visitors never see.
