Basilica of Saint Nicholas, Amsterdam tickets: which one to buy

Entry is free with a donation box. Nothing inside is ticketed. Organ recitals on the Sauer instrument are held on some weekday afternoons and are free or ask a small contribution; the church also hosts a Latin sung mass on Sunday mornings, which is a rarity in the Netherlands. Guided walking tours of the old centre pass the church and cost a moderate amount.

The basilica stands directly opposite Amsterdam Centraal station, on the Prins Hendrikkade, which makes it the first and last building most visitors see and the one almost nobody enters. Nothing needs booking. The church closes between services in the middle of the day at some seasons, which is worth checking before crossing the road. The parish publishes its opening hours on a board by the door and they change with the season.

Amsterdam's Catholics worshipped in hidden churches for two centuries after the Reformation; when the ban lifted, they built this. Adrianus Bleijs designed it in 1884 and it opened in 1887, combining neo-Baroque and neo-Renaissance in a way that was already old-fashioned when new, with two towers, a rose window and a dome over the crossing. St Nicholas is the patron of both the church and the city, which is why Sinterklaas arrives in Amsterdam by boat each November.

Inside, the barrel vault is painted, the high altar carries a relief of the Last Supper, and a crown above the sanctuary refers to the imperial crown Maximilian granted the city in 1489, the same crown that tops the Westerkerk tower. A rib of St Nicholas, given by Egmond Abbey in 2021, is kept as a relic. The high altar holds a monstrance given by the hidden church of Het Boompje, from which this parish descends, and the organ was built by Sauer of Frankfurt in 1889. Two towers and a dome give the church a silhouette borrowed from Rome, and the rose window between them carries a relief of Christ with the four evangelists carved in 1886.

Open most days from late morning to mid-afternoon, with services on Sunday mornings and at some weekday times; hours are shorter than most Amsterdam attractions and the door is often shut when visitors expect otherwise. The area in front of the station is busy at all hours. The interior is dim and the painted vault needs the lights on, which happens for services.

Dress is informal. Photography without flash is allowed. Allow twenty minutes. The Oude Kerk in the red-light district is ten minutes away, and the church is a good place to sit for a moment between arriving in the city and entering it. Sinterklaas arrives in the city by boat in mid-November and the church is at the centre of the celebrations.
